Smash Mouth Youth Ministry: Building a Youth Ministry for Boys

Presenter... A Missionary Church pal from Indy... Dave Ambrose.

“So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.” Gen. 1:27

The 2 Biggies:
1. Boys are DIFFERENT from girls!

  • These are sweeping generalizations.
    The way communication is done.
Guys tend to be more energy filled.
    Guys form relationships different.
Guys tend to be less vulnerable.
    Guys can resolve conflict quickly.
Guys will likely care less about what they’re wearing.
    Guys want respect over love.
Guys visually stimulated, gals stimulated by relationship.
Guys build things (forts), get dirty and stay dirty. Hate the bathtub or shower.
Love to pass gas and their proud of it.
You need guys who will challenge guys uniquely; and women who will raise guys uniquely.
Three great books, “Wild at Heart” “Raising Modern Day Nights.” "Wild Man’s Journey"

2. FEMININITY can never bestow MASCULINITY

  • In America, we tend to fear the idea that boys will be boys. The primary tool for making boys more like girls is the public school system… Eldridge Wild at Heart
How has that system spread itself into the church.
4x as many teenage boys suffer from ADD.

3 Questions every boy asks:
1. Who Am I? (Question of Identity)
2. What am I here for? (Intention)
3. Do I have what it takes?

A Catholic prayer for guys to grasp:

Who made me? God Made me
What am I here for? I’m here for God.
Where am I heading? I’m heading toward God.

Great thoughts on the dangerous "feminizing" of students. I walked away wanting more ideas on how to combat this. How do we make sure guys are being encouraged and allowed to love God in the way they've been called to be.

Do you not realise just how sexist this post is?

Not only are you making value judgements and sweeping statements about how girls and women develop, but you also stereotype boys and men into a box where if you are 'vulnerable' (by this I guess you mean the ability to show emotions) and not interested in 'getting dirty' and 'passing gas' then you are excluded.

Of course boys are different from girls. I agree that mens spirituality and the language and medium used for its expression may differ, and I agree that men need tools to be able to positively influence the spiritual formation of boys and men.I agree that there may be more work to do in this area, both within the church and in critical thinking on what it means to be a man. This is also applicable to womens spirituality, yet we have relatively few positions of responsibility, despite what the implications of stealth feminisation.

We are a community, God's people and we need to find some common language which includes all. Please think about it.
