A new feature here on the old blog. I value knowing what books, TV/Movies, and music people are getting into. So I'm going to let you know what I'm currently reading, watching and listening to.
I'm Reading:
High School Confidential: Secrets of an Undercover Student by Jeremy Iversen
Upon graduating from Stanford at age 24, Jeremy Iversen spends a Semester at a Southern California High School as a student. Only the school superintendent and principal know his true identity. Iversen (not a Christ Follower) recounts his experiences and interactions. He takes liberties with the timeline of events, but seeks to stay true to the conversations and quotes that students make.
Every parent and Youthworker should take time to read this book. It is not for the faint at heart. It is harsh, gutwrenching, and graphic. It is also a rare unblemished look into the life of the American High School. It is reminding me that one of the most significant mission fields in the world today is the American High School Campus.
I'm Watching:
The Prestige starring Hugh Jackman; Christian Bale; and Michael Caine
Basic Plot...Two magicians (Jackman and Bale) battle to be the greatest magicians of their time.
This is one of those "big twist at the end" movies. Crazy thing happened for me. I ordered a Large Diet Coke, and got a refill about 1/3 of the way through. As the movie neared it's end, and the "big reveal" was about to come, I found myself doubled over in pain from bladder pressure. I was faced with a dilemma... miss the big reveal, or pee my pants. It was a tough call, but I chose to relieve myself. Fortunately, I made it back for the big reveal.
A good movie. Not great, but worthwhile. Gollum is in it, so that's cool.
Also, I'm watching Monday Night Football right now. It's official; NBC Sunday Night Football is winning the battle for the best show. Production value, commentators, matchups... there's just no contest!
I'm Listening To:
First off, I probably won't be listening to Pulse FM very much in light of Corey's recent announcement. I applaud Corey's making a call to say no to a good thing in order to say yes to the God Things in his life.
I'm returning to an oldie of sorts. The Beautiful Letdown by Switchfoot would probably rank as one of the most influential albums on my life. I want Jason Miller to sing 24 at my funeral. What's really been connecting with me lately has been lines like...
I want more than just okay/
More than fine/
More than bent on getting by/
More than fine/
More than just okay
We were meant to live for so much more/
have we lost ourselves?
I want to see miracles/
To see the world change/
Wrestle with angels/
For more than a name
I'm more convinced than ever that there's more to this life than a lot of us are living. This album has been confirming what's been going on in my heart. Let the dreamers dream!!!
