The Reality of Ministry

It's 3:30 am Sunday morning, so this may be a little dicey and discombobulated...

I just got back from the Emergency Room. I was there with Brant, a student from our Senior High. Brant has been growing in his faith like crazy over the past year. He's on the NYGO team this year (read post below). Brant actually shared with us about some of the pain he's gone through with the divorce of his parents and his deep desire to see his dad come to know Christ.

Tonight, Brant's father and father's girlfriend were in a motorcycle accident (the car involved in the accident was being driven by another student in our ministry). His father's girlfriend didn't make it. His father suffered significant injuries in the accident and they had to do emergency surgery... remove his spleen, put in some tubes, work on other fractures.

Joining me at the hospital from NMC to be there for this student were...
  • Jason Muckel (SOAR Intern who has made some significant investments in Brant)
  • Neal Yoder (Brant's Small Group Leader this past year)
  • Reid Yoder (Neal's son...rooming with myself and Brant at NYGO this year. He's been a strong spiritual encouragement to Brant this year.)
So, there we are, sitting in the Emergency Room, when it hits me. This is ministry. This is tough. There's no right words. No right things to do. Just be there.

Tonight I'm faced with the reality of ministry, and it is messy and tough and inconvenient on time and full of unknowns... but I rejoice in the reality that tonight, of the four of us there with Brant, I (the youth pastor) was the least significant of the 4 NMC reps there. There were 3 other individuals who have "been there" for Brant for a while... and that is awesome!

Brant's dad made it through surgery, and there's a lot to be determined as they look at the recovery process. He could use prayer.

Derry,

Your last two posts both encouraged me and broke my heart at the same time. I'll be praying for Brant and his family, and for "Godly appointments" for you and others to show God's love to them during this difficult time.

May God wrap them all up in His almighty arms and comfort them now.

Keep up the good work, DP. Even though you were 4th on the list, the other three wouldn't have been there if it wasn't for you and your work for Him. Just like Pastors Dave, Joe, and Terry, you are making the same impact in others. Don't ever get discouraged. Nights like that...like you said, that's why we're here, and that's what He's called us to.

(stepping down off my soapbox... ;^) )
