Anger isn't a sin...
You know that situation, attitude, or person that just makes your blood boil? That anger may be placed by God.
What are the things that ticks me off?
- Indifference
- Religion (empty works without a passion to follow Christ)
- Those who take others down so they can advance
- Pessimism
- Fat, lazy Christians
- Watching those I love being abused or taken advantage of
- Parents who let "being cool" or "being like" drive how they parent
Ephesians 4:26a
"In your anger do not sin"
When I'm really angry, I tend to lose control. The Hulk comes out. I'm at a very vulnerable spot where I may allow emotions to determine my response. I may pass judgment where it's not mine to pass. I may gossip or slander. I may develop hatred or act out in fits of rage.
At the same time, when anger rises up, I can be tempted to do nothing with it. I see injustice or others in pain or a "Christian" defaming Christ, and I say to myself, "Oh, it's not my place" or "I don't want to do or say anything I'll regret."
I find myself in this place often. You know what's funny though... I can't think of many more situations in my life where I did or said nothing and regret it verses moments where I did or said something and regret it.
God calls us to be passionate. Jesus wants to see people living in passion. In fact, we read that one of the things that makes him most sick is the one who is indifferent:
Revelation 3:16
So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth.
So, anger isn't a sin... maybe more importantly it's what you don't do with it that can be.
James 4:17
Anyone, then, who knows the good he ought to do and doesn't do it, sins.
