A Non-Christian's View of Christians

You've undoubtedly heard of the controversy surrounding The Golden Compass; a movie based on the His Dark Materials trilogy by Phillip Pullman.
I need to say first and foremost that I am very uneducated concerning the author, the book series, and the movies. That is not the point of this post. The book series seems to have an anti-Christian message to it that has caused some religious groups to boycott the movie (see here).

One of my common reading stops is Cinematical; a great source for the latest movie news. They have had two posts (here and here) concerning the movie, and what I have found extremely interesting is the discussion that follows in the comment section below the two posts.

As I read the comments, I found myself much less intrigued by the movie than I did by something deeper going on. The comment section gives an intriguing view various non-Christians views of Christians and Chritianity as a whole. It also contains some comments from various Christians that take on a variety of tones.
Read the posts and comments here and here and let them mess with you.

As I read the comments, I found myself asking a few questions like...

If this is how nonChristians view Christianity, can I blame them for not wanting to be one?
Why does my stomach seem to churn every time I see the words "Religious" or "Christian" combined with the word "right"?

What is the proper balance between abstinence from "worldly things" and engagement with "the world"?
How would Jesus, Paul, John Wesley, D.L. Moody have interacted in this format?

What are Christians hoping to accomplish in their comments posted?
Does a "boycott" like this accomplish anything?
