Movie Time

What do you do when you wake up to a snowstorm at 5:30 am (thank you jet lag)? You watch a documentary on Competitive video gaming.

The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters
is the story of two men gunning for the world record high score to Donkey Kong.
The characters:
Billy Mitchell - "legendary" video game champ Billy Mitchell and Steve Weibe , the only person to ever complete a perfect game (no deaths, every possible point scored) on Pac-Man.
Steve Wiebe - The school teacher and family man who, as a personal (but obsessive) hobby, started playing Donkey Kong.

May not sound all that exciting, but it was a fascinating and entertaining film on many levels.
  • The intrigue and intensity of rivalry works about anywhere. The movie definitely takes up sides with Wiebe as the underdog and paints Mitchell to be a real jerk. You can't help yourself but pick up sides and want to see Wiebe bring down the Evil Empire.
  • The dangers of bitterness and hatred. There are some supporting cast in both camps that just make you sick in their vindictiveness.
  • The things we will wrap our lives and identity in. There is a powerful scene where Wiebes little daughter Jillian (maybe 6 years old) is riding with her dad to a tournament put on by Guiness book of World Records. RStaring directly at her dad, she innocently says, "A lot of people have ruined their life trying to get in that book."
