Cycling and Saving

I'm not gonna lie... these gas prices are taking a toll on our household. We're working through different ways to make sure we are not living above our means. One other goal I have for this Summer is to get outside a lot. So, here's the plan for the Summer. Find as many times as possible to ride the bike instead of drive.

For Example...
  • Monday, instead of driving over to Graversons, ride the bike... 1.25 miles.
  • Today, instead of driving around for errands in town (pick up prescriptions, post office, movies from red box), ride the bike... 2.5 miles.
Added bonus of time with Katylynn (I love the bike trailer).
  • Tomorrow (and many days to come), instead of driving to work, ride the bike... 4 miles. The added bonus will come on the days to work when I bum a ride to lunch, or take a church vehicle for ministry business.
To date, 3.75 miles.
The mpg on a 1992 Camry are said to be approx. 22.
Every 22 miles biked, I'm saving nearly $4.

We'll see how it goes.

One bad thing about living in the country is that I can't ride a bike to do my errands. Well, I guess I could, but then I don't think my kids would be able to ride their bikes to and from the grocery store in Nappanee. Plus, how would I carry $150 worth of food on my bike? I envy you being able to ride your bike a lot of places. And it is great fitness too!

Hey the Amish do it every day. They don't always smell the best afterwards but, hey. I think Shelley would look cool, with one of those little trailers behind her bike.

We usually ride bike around town in the summer. Not only does it save gas, it's good exercise and hardly takes more time than driving.
We can bring home quite a lot of groceries in our trailer, depending on wether or not there is a kid in it.

In all seriousness, I'm proud of you for getting on the bike. I hope you keep it up. You're then one step closer to becoming a triathlete. I think the fitness gains are so worth it. Go Derry!

While I’m not trying to be negative, but trying to be the voice of reason, I’ll do the math. It cost you $.18 per mile (at $4 a gallon) to drive your Camry. After riding your bike to work and home today you would have rode 7.75 miles, so you saved $1.39. If you rode your bike to work for a week you would be saving $3.60 ($14.40 a month).

Ah, but Paco, you are not including the trips to town for lunch where I will not bum a ride, or over to Elkhart for appointments and I'll take a church vehicle instead of driving the car.

That's where the miles add up.
