Not talked about often by me, but I am an insulin dependant diabetic. Been so since 8th grade. One of the great joys of this little disease is hypoglycemia, or low blood sugar. Basically explained, it's when there is too much insulin in the blood stream, and not enough sugar (their kind of yin and yang to each other). It makes you light headed, sweaty, and really shaky. To deal with hypoglycemia, you eat.
I will often get it during the night if I have a goofy evening. Usually, if it hits at night, in my exhaustion I will walk out to the kitchen and grab whatever food is nearby with sugar. It's been cookies, milk, juice, ice cream, fruit, crackers, granola bars, Mountain Dew, or maybe a combination of several of those items. It takes about 10 minutes for the shaky-sweaty-yucky feeling to go away. At night, I often do overkill on the amount of food, because I just want to go to sleep. Also, a walk through of the kitchen the next morning may leave someone thinking the house had been robbed by a sugar seeking thief during the night.
Occassionaly, the low blood sugar night will mix with a wide awake feeling, and it will end up with an hour or two of middle-of-the-night, "what to do time." So, here I find myself, posting on my blog at 2:40 a.m.
Thank You diabetes.
