32 Years, 32 Memories... 25-28

Post College to Present Part 1

25. Dam fun - In the Fall of 1999, Shawn LaRue, Jason Thompson and I went on a 10 day road/backpacking trip. We headed to Arizona and did a 4 night backpacking tour to the bottom of the Grand Canyon and back up. From there, we decided to head to the Lights of Las Vegas for a night. The four hour drive took us to the Nevada/Arizona state line and directly across the Hoover Dam. As we entered and crossed the dam, there was a ten minute conversation that had me absolutely busting out in laughter. I think it started with Shawn asking, "We're on the dam road right?" It just kept rolling from there.
Look at all this dam traffic.
Do we want to stop and look around at all the dam stuff?
Where is the dam parking?
Are we going to take any dam video?
Hey, look at all the power lines. There's probably a lot of dam voltage flowing through.

26. A box burning in my pocket, but the sprinklers put it out - In the Summer of 1999, I decided I was ready to ask Janelle to marry me. She had spent her summer in a discipleship program with Kingdom Building Ministries. She'd traveled to Malaysia for a month as well as around the U.S. to several camps, but she finished up her experience in Denver. I decided to fly out and surprise her. That was where I was going to pop the question. We went to Dinner at Carraba's and then took a walk. We found a place to sit in a nice grassy area. It wasn't picture perfect, but it was nice enough. I had the ring in my pocket. I was pyching myself up for the moment. I was a mess inside, but trying to stay cool on the outside.
I reached the point where I was ready. I put my hand in my pocket. As I was pulling it out, a strange sound rose up all around us. Janelle screamed, "Run!" The next thing I knew she was gone, and the sprinkler system for the lawn we were sitting at was up and running. I took off after her, and as we were laughing out the outside, I was dying on the inside.
Finally, 1 hour later, after a long walk back to the hotel where Janelle's parents were staying, I got on a knee in a parking lot under a night light and ask the love of my life to be my bride. (fyi, she said "Yes.")

27. Surprising lies - In the 3 months leading to our 5th aniversary, I lied like crazy to Janelle. I was hiding money from her and telling her of plans made that actually weren't going to happen. I was able to plan a 7 day Mexican Riviera cruise as an aniversary gift. I was able to keep her in the dark until we got in the cab at LAX to take us to the port. The trip included star treatment at a resort in Cabo San Lucas, horseback riding in Mazatlan, and ziplining through the jungles in Puerto Vallarta. I'm still living off the fumes of that one with Janelle! (fyi, she forgave me for the lies.)

28. That's our Neighbors! We lived in an apartment for our first year of marriage. We really loved it. We had a wide range of neighbors. Some we got to know closely. One day, Janelle was at home and Judge Joe Brown came on the TV. If you don't know that show, it's the same as The People's Court, Judge Judy, and the View (okay maybe not the View). As the individuals who have agreed to put their dysfunctions on display for the world to see entered, Janelle was blown away to see our neighbors on the screen! She popped a video tape in and hit record. When I got home from work that day, we sat and watched together in disbelief as our neighbors argued with an ex-wife over various monetary discrepencies. We're social panzies, so we never asked our neighbors about it.
