Friday 5: Thoughts on Jay Cutler Trade

The Denver Broncos traded QB Jay Cutler to the Chicago Bears for 2 First round draft picks and Kyle Orton. I'm a Colts fan through and through. I enjoy seeing the Bears succeed, yet I also greatly enjoy seeing Bears fans emotionally crushed... quite paradoxical and very unpastorly of me, I know.

So here are 5 somewhat paradoxical thoughts on the Jay Cutler trade:
  1. Considering the Bears history with QBs, this could honestly already be the best QB they've ever had without him playing a single down. Kyle Orton looked really good last year and I have a feeling he will do well in Denver... I think he'll have a better statistical season than Jay Cutler.
  2. Two first round draft picks is a lot for any stud. I'd say it's absolutely ridiculous for any team to do as you are killing yourself for the future. Consider the Bears 1st round draft history, and this is the most brilliant thing they've ever done. (note: Matt Forte was a 2nd round pick last year).
  3. Cutler is an elite stud QB. He's exactly what many Bears fans have been dreaming about for years. The Bears love the non-prima donna, bring your lunch to work, no-nonsense guy. Cutler shows signs quite the opposite. The one player from the past who went against this mold is Jim McMahon. Is Cutler a McMahon?
  4. Cutler's has a gun for an arm. The passing game should take a huge step up. Who's he going to throw too? Can Devin Hester catch the ball? His best receiver is his Running Back.
  5. Cutler has diabetes. I really want him to succeed as a fellow diabetic. Cutler has shown signs of a whiny pathetic attitude. I really want him to flounder to show that charicter counts.

Cutler won't be better than Sid Luckman but he has the potential to be very good.

The rumor in the Windy City is that Angelo might try and get Marvin Harrison or Torry Holt to give a little help to the WR crew. Since Earl Bennett played a year with Cutler at Vandy (and had one of his best seasons in college), I'm excited to see if they can't work to be a great duo.

Wow thats a big statement to say Culter is already the best QB the Bears have ever had!!! McMahon was not slouch he may have had a 10 cent brain but he could play and had his time shortened thanks to injuries.

You sound a little conflicted... ;^)

I loved Jimmy Mac, but honestly, with the '85 Bears D, all he needed to do was take care of the ball and occasionally make a play. He was a great leader, but I don't know it he was a great QB.

I hate the Bears, but I think they robbed Denver. Even with the picks, getting a 26 year old Pro Bowl QB is worth it, even with the baggage. Keep in mind, though, Josh McDaniels, Denver's new coach, took a guy that hadn't started a game since high school and turned him into a top 10 starting QB in the NFL...there may be hope for Kyle Orton, as much as it pains me to say it...

Sid Luckman was the Best Bears QB ever...but those were in the Black and White TV days...

As a Bears fan I'm okay with giving up the draft picks and at least taking a risk and trying to do something!

Bears can get what they need with later round picks and save that 1st round money for free agents (O. Pace). They need one big play wide receiver...they have plenty of slots receivers, so a washed up Marvin Harrison is pointless to me, unless he comes cheap.

I'm still not sure how the Colts got lucky and won a Super Bowl...but I do enjoy watching them choke in the playoffs in all the other years! For Colts fans...they should enjoy that one magical year!

You're right Phil. The Colts were very lucky to be able to play such a sub-par team for their Super Bowl Championship.

They have also been lucky only having 2 losing seasons since 1998, missing the playoffs in only those 2 seasons.

Pure luck.

"They should enjoy that one magical year..."

I've NEVER (sarcasm) heard Bear fan go on and on about the 85 Super-Bowl Shufflin' Bears.

As I said, I enjoy seeing the Bears do well. Bears fans... well Phil, I love you, but you're proving why it's enjoyable to watch the Bears flounder.

Sorry...just saw your reply.

The Colts could be compared to the 90's Braves...lots of winning, and, thankfully for them, 1 Ring. Most teams would be thrilled with that, except teams who are always good but somehow usually crack in big moments (outside of '06 for the Colts and '95 for Braves).

My point was that often the "Best team" doesn't always win it all...and some luck is involved quite often to win it all. That is the beauty (And agony) of sports.

And the Bears have a plethora of Championships...but most before the SB era :(

You could argue the Bears should've won another SB or two in the 80's but didn't (49ers got in the way often). The reason we love '85 is b/c of the dominance of the team...not simply that they won, but that they DOMINATED! Everyone knew they'd win the SB.

For the Colts, the irnoic thing is that they looked the most vulnerable the year they actually won! And b/c Tom Brady's receivers dropped all those open field passes! haha...now I'm just messing with you!

As for Cutler...we'll see. I'm ready for NFL!

At least we can enjoy the Cubs together!
