10 for the 2000s: 2005

  1. Super Bowl XXXIX - The Patriots won their 2nd straight and 3rd Super Bowl this decade. The word dynasty starts rolling around. They haven't won another since, but their best team was still to come.
  2. Online Videos: A little website calls Youtube goes live. The internet changes significantly again. Within a year, 65,000 videos were being uploaded to the site every day, and there were 10,000,000 views.
  3. More Remakes and Sequels: Top 5 grossing films were Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, War of the Worlds, and King Kong.
  4. The Death of a Pope: John Paul II died April 2. More than 4 million traveled to the Vatican to mourn.
  5. New Pope: Joseph Ratzinburger became Pope Benedict XVI.
  6. Hurricane Katrina: It was considered to be the Gulf's most active Hurricane Season in recorded history. The mother of them all was Katrina. The devastation was overwhelming. The news coverage was raw and brutal. Thousands died. In a lot of ways this is where George W. Bush's popularity took a huge hit.
  7. Gas Prices: As a product of Katrina, gas prices skyrocket.
  8. Leap Second: I didn't know this, but I thought it was interesting. One second was added to the world clock at the end of the year in order to stay in line with the solar clock.
  9. Prison Break: The show debuts on Fox. I didn't watch it then, but I started last year around this time. Good stuff.
  10. Terri Schiavo: It was a significant story of a family taking the fate of a lady to the courts. Her husband wanted the feeding tube removed from her while the parents didn't. In 2005, the courts ruled in favor of the husband, and Terry passed away.
