In a church, on the TV, sitting around the dinner table, or in our own personal Time Alone With God.
This year in my own devotional journy, I've been trying to focus in on the often overlooked (or read without much thought) elements of the Birth story. Here's my little list of these elements that I've taken time to study on and meditate over...
- There is a 500 year gap between Malachi and Matthew... God sits silent in the time leading up to the birth of Christ.
- Mary was most likely a teenager (some say as young as 12, but most would agree between 14-17)
- There was "no room" for a pregnant woman in her final trimester in her pledged-husband's home town.
- Jesus was a bastard child.
- Jesus first resting place was a feeding trough for livestock.
- The Wise men came later (they weren't at the stable), we don't know how many there were, and they were likely from a different religion.
- Shepherds (low-end sociologically) were the first to divinely hear of the birth.
