Road Trip

We have taken a few day trips with Katylynn, but next Sunday afternoon we are hitting the road for Ludington Michigan. It will be a 4 night/ 5 day excursion to my parents cottage. We will be able to put the minivan to the test. The goal is a lot of time together relaxing, hiking, playing, laughing, and eating.

So here's the deal, we need some experts advice. As we load up for this first trip with a soon-to-be 5 month old, I need some packing tips...

Three questions for your consideration (you can pick one, two, or do all three):
  1. What is something we should be sure to take along that we may not think of?
  2. What is something we should leave at home that we may be tempted to take?
  3. It's a four hour trip... what traveling tips do you have?
Let the advice flow!!

Leave at naptime. 5 months is easy...wait until need constant interaction. That is a trip!

Window shades. The first long trip we took with Sophie at about that age, we had to put a blanket over the window, which meant it was flapping against the outside of the car the whole trip.

Have a bottle warmer in the car. I used to have one that plugged into the car outlet, that way I could just sit in the back and feed the baby without having to stop the car to feed. It will be definitely worth it! I also was able to change diapers while the baby was still in the carseat, which again helps save time by not having all those diaper changing stops along the way. Remember your playpen & a stroller - two must-haves. And don't forget your camera! If I think of more, I will post them. The main thing is to pack light. A few toys, diapers, wipes, formula. Most parents overpack then get frustrated.

Definitely leave at naptime, our son is 1 & we still do that whenever we make trips & it makes life a little easier on him & especially on us! I agree with the overpacking thing as well...you always think that they'll need more than they do! You'd be surprised how entertained she'll be just being in a new place with new things to look at...tons of toys won't be necessary!
