32 Years, 32 Memories... 21-24

The College Years

21. More Runner Up - I made Bethel College Homecoming Court my Sophomore and Junior Year. I was in Ecuador for my Senior Year. As a part of the Court, we had to prepare dramas. They would give us a theme, and we had to come up with something. Our Sophomore theme was TV Shows, so we did "Saved By the Bell, the Bethel College Years". I played the role of Zack Morris (when I was in High School, a girl stopped me while I was in Michigan and asked me if I was Mark-Paul Gosselor. She really seemed serious... that's a memory inside this memory... I think that screws up my count.) How did I finish? Didn't win. Michael Edison, why did you have to be such a nice guy?

22. The First try bombed big time. - It was my the Spring semester of my Sophomore Year. Bowling class. Yup, that's right, Bowling class. Once a week, we'd drive to Regal Lanes and bowl two games for credit. The class ended with a big tournament.
I had been taken an intentional break on the dating scene in order to get my heart a little more in order. There was this Freshman lady named Janelle whom I found to be rather attractive. I had never talked to her, and didn't know her really well. One day in class, she was bowling at a lane by herself while everyone was pretty much finished. Apparently she had arrived late. She was bowling a great game. I stopped, I thought I'd found my chance. I walked up to her and said something like, "You're tearing it up. Maybe you could be on my team for the bowling tournament" (clearly a top 10 all-time pick-up line).
She looked at me, smiled, and said, "Yeah, right. Whatever." There was a clear "I'm -not-interested-in-you-at-all tone as she turned around and walked off. I had put myself out there, and it was ugly. Fortunately, the next Fall, things worked out a little better.

23. Pennies - I was in a more apartmentish dorm my Junior year. Landon was a great roommate. He made us laugh a lot. One night we were sitting in our living area being bored. Landon looked up excitedly and said, "You know what we should do?"
We leaned forward in anticipation. "We should put a cup by the tv and throw pennies in it."
You may think we laughed and mocked Landon. Well, we did. But then we actually tried it. Landon brought out an extra large plastic souvenier cup. We each grabbed a handful of pennies from his penny jar and set ourselves up on the couches equidistant from the cup and began to toss. Records were soon being kept for longest streak, longest shot, best in a certain spot, etc. We probably lived off that game for a month.

24. Picture with a Murderer
- I spent the First Semester of my Senior year in Ecuador. It was an incredible three months. A highlight was a trip into Shel Mera. The town is right at the edge of the jungle. From there, we boarded a very small plane in two shifts where we flew into the area where Missionaries Jim Elliot, Nate Saint, Ed McCully, Pete Fleming, and Roger Youderian had been martyred while attempting to share the gospel with the Huaorani tribe. Many from that tribe later converted from the missions efforts of Elisabeth Elliot (Jim's wife) and Rachel Saint (Nate's sister).
We were given a tour by Dyuma, the Huaorani lady who went back into the jungle with the lady missionaries. I also met a man named Kimo. We had a major language barrier, but I was able to pick up that he was around 40 years earlier when the missionaries were killed. It wasn't till we'd left the jungle that I found out I had met the man who had speare Pete Fleming to death. This same man was one of the first of his people to convert to Christianity, and was now an elder in the Huaorani church. (picture at top of this post)

I'm loving this series of memories.

There were lots of memories from the year we lived in that apartment - I might even recall one when I answer the questions I was asked.
